WORCESTER, MASS. — An East Providence Jr. Townies entry is one of the teams vying for a regional championship this weekend when squads from around the area gather for the 2011 New England Pop Warner Football championships at Foley Stadium.

Winners of the Regional Championships will advance to the 55th annual Pop Warner Super Bowl at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex™ in Lake Buena Vista, FL, Saturday, Dec. 3-10.

This year's E.P. Jr. Midget team includes a number of players who were members of the former East Providence Mohawks Pee Wee Division team which advanced to the national event last fall.

Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. is the largest and oldest youth football, cheer and dance organization. Pop Warner has a long history of promoting safe and structured athletics and instilling the qualities of sportsmanship, hard work and leadership in its young athletes. It is the only national youth sports organization that requires academic proficiency as a prerequisite to participation. The NFLPA estimates that 70% of current NFL players started their career in Pop Warner programs.

10 am: Worcester Vikings vs. Bridgeport Raiders (Jr. Pee Wee)

11:45 am: New Haven Steelers vs. Reading Rockets (Pee Wee)

1:30 pm: New Haven Steelers vs. Brookline-JP Patriots (Jr. Midget)

3:15 pm: Hyde Park Cowboys vs. East Lynn Bulldogs (Midget)

Division 2, Saturday, Nov. 26

9 am: West Lynn Rams vs. Milford Eagles (Jr. Pee Wee)

10:45 am: Mt. Hope Cowboys vs. Amherst Patriots (Pee Wee)

12:30 pm: East Providence Jr. Townies vs. Apponequet Warriors (Jr. Midget)

2:15 pm: Mt. Hope Cowboys vs. West Lynn Rams (Midget)

4 pm: Mt. Washington Valley vs. Brookfield Bobcats (Patriot)

Pena recognized

Jace Pena, quarterback for the Jr. Townies Jr. Midgets, was recently chosen by youth1.com as one of the top young quarterback prospects in the nation for 2011 as well as been chosen as a "Rising Star" from the website.
