WESTPORT — The Fall River Water Department along with the Friends of Watuppa Woods invites volunteers to participate in a “project double feature.”
Part one — “Help us release the ‘Green Monster,’ organizers say.
Buried within a tangle of wild grapes in the corner of an overgrown field across from reservation headquarters in Westport (at the Fall River line) is a 15-ton hunk of steel.
“Best we can tell it is a towable, two-drum road roller,” says Watuppa forester Mike Labossier. “This contraption may have been used here decades ago to maintain fire access roads. We’ll use loppers and bow saws to free the beast and prepare it for towing back to headquarters.”
Part two of the project is the “Search for King Philip’s Camp.” In his 1941 History of Fall River, Arthur Sherman Phillips described an historic encampment near King Philip’s Brook. This spot, presented as reliable tradition, is said to be one of the native warrior’s final stops on his trek from Rochester to Mount Hope at the close of the war in 1676.
Using this description of the original site, the group will grid search the area and try to uncover evidence that may corroborate the story.
The event is free. Dress warmly.
