The Seekonk Jr. Warriors 13-year-old division cheerleaders qualified to compete in the AYF National Championship event.
SEEKONK WORCESTER — Three Seekonk Jr. Warriors cheer squads recently competed in the annual American Youth Football New England Regional spirit competition at the DCU Center Sunday, Nov. 27, where the local 13-year-old and under entry finished third in its age group and became the first-ever group from town to qualify for nationals.
n The team is coached by Kathy Shillan and assisted by Renee George-Kuczek and Debra Parker. Cheerleaders are Celina Fonseca, Kyra Kearns, Kayla McDermott, Leah Noelte, Alissa Pacheco, Katerina Parker, Samantha Reis, Katelyn Silvia and Megan Souza. The Jr. Warriors now advance to the AYF National Cheer Competition on Dec. 10 in Orlando, Fla.
“It is the first time in the history of the organization that any team travels to a national championship. This is an honor to say the least,” said Seekonk president M.J. Bernard. “Of course with that is cost. The organization would appreciate any and all help. We have a week and a half to raise the funds to send them to Florida, not a lot of time.”

n Also competing at regionals were the Seekonk 10-year-old and 12-year-old division squads. The 12s finished fourth in their competition, narrowly missing out on advancing to nationals.
n In the Blackstone Valley Youth Football League state championship held in late October at the University of Rhode Island’s Ryan Center, the local 10-year-old division team captured the championship. The 10s also won the Overall Spirit Award in the competition. Other results for the Jr. Warriors had both their 12-year-old and 13-year-old division teams finish as runners-up in their respective competitions while the Seekonk Tiny/Mitey Mite Division team won the “Best Stunts” category.
