Hunter nearly drowns
It came near to being a fatal shooting trip, when in some unaccountable manner Charles E. Blake was plunged into the icy river by the over turning of his canoe. There have been quite a few duck skirting along the shores and over the waters, on the large cove …south of the Central Bridge, and the hunters have also been many. Sunday afternoon Mr. Blake set out in his canoe to bag some of hte game if possible and to have an hour or so of sport. He is an expert both with gun and canoe but in some way as he was about to fire at some passing birds, he lost his balance, the canoe was overturned and he was precipitated into the water. The place where the accident happened was in full view of a number of houses from the East shore, and it was but a short while after it happened, that the overturned canoe was noticed. Almost the first to be drawn to the fact, was Miss Mertice Blake, daughter of the imperiled sportsman. Summoning Charles A. Hoar, a neighbor, they put off in a skiff to the rescue. In the meantime Mr. Blake had struck out for the west shore. Heavily weighed by his boots and clothing and chilled by the ice cold waters as he was, yet he swam nearly 400 yards stopping only when he reached shoal water. Here his rescuers found him, his head just above the surface. He was hurriedly taken into the skiff and the boat headed for the shore where quite a rowd had gathered. It was found that his heart was beating, and Dr. F.P. Drowne was hastily summoned and in a few moments was at work over the unconscious man. It was upwards of an hour before he regained consciousness. He was removed to his own home shortly after. Mr. Blake was completely prostrated by his experience; the long swim, the ice plunge, and the exposure not only exhausting him, but giving him a severe nervous shock. It is not expected taht anything more serious will come of his adventure. Mr. Blake is well known about this section. He was formerly a resident of this town but of late has made his home in Hampden Meadows. He is an expert accountant, having offices in Providence, and a large clientele throughout the state.
