100 Years Ago in Warren: Christmas gift-giving

Taken from the pages of the Warren and Barrington Gazette this week in December 1912:

Swill carriers

Be it ordained: No vehicle or receptacle shall be used to carry swill, garbage, or offal through any street or highway in the compact part of said town unless the same shall be water tight, well painted on the outside, and kept clean, and provided with tightly fitting covers, which shall be kept closed and securely fastened while said vehicle or receptacle is being moved from one place to another.

A photo for Christmas

Now that the Christmas season is here, and the question of gifts is being discussed, the ad of G.B. Church should receive the attention it deserves. There is nothing that quite takes the place of a photograph as a gift, and the work of Mr. Church gives such universal satisfaction that there can be no doubt as to the result of a sitting. Better attend to the matter right away, as the time is none too long now.

New milk house

Charles D. Gifford has completed the erection of a very fine and substantial milk house, on his premises. When the appointments are added it will be one of the finest hereabouts, for the purpose for which it has been built.

Police reports

At the town council … was the report of the chief of police for the month ending Nov. 30. The activities of this department were somewhat smaller than usual, showing a remarkably quiet condition of affairs in the community. The details of the report are as follows: larceny 1, assault 2, disturbances suppressed 9, locked up for safe keeping 6, private warrants served 2, cases investigated 11. One team, reported stolen, was recovered; also one bicycle. Antonio Pieillo was warned to desist from beating his wife and children, no warrant having been issued against him.
