John B. Moniz, 94, Adamsville native

John B. Moniz, widower of E. Jane Moniz, joined his heavenly Father on January 14, 2018. He was 94 years old. A life-long Roman Catholic, he was the son of Portuguese immigrants, the late Manuel Souza Moniz and Emilia Branca Moniz.

His Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Jan. 23, in the Saint John Catholic Church. Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell followed at Riverview Memorial Park. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., North Area Chapel, 2119 Dorchester Road, North Charleston, SC 29405.

John grew up on the family farm in Adamsville, RI. At 19 years of age, he joined the US Navy, serving in various locations. He was a survivor of a kamikaze attack on the USS Isherwood in 1945 that killed 80 men.

In 1946 he met his lifelong love, Jane, at a dance at Charleston County Hall. They married in 1947.

John worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1981. He was an avid golfer who played until his 90s. He loved to tell stories of his life, including his two holes in one. He was a faithful member of St. John Catholic Church for more than 70 years. He also was a longtime member of the Charleston Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his brother, Harry Moniz of RI; daughters, Judith Moniz-Roen (Roger) of Coeur d'Alene, ID, Amelia Moniz of Mt. Pleasant and Cheryl Moniz (Douglas Cunningham) of North Charleston, SC; grandchildren, Senator Sean Bennett (Tina), Brian Moniz (Selene), Lauren Moniz, Philip Moniz (Nikki), Jenna McSwain (Matthew Martinez), Shannon McSwain; great-grandchildren: Haile, Hayden, Peyton, Ella, William, Wade, Wesley, Georgia and Noah; step grandchildren, Heather, Michaela, Maria, Jessica, Hillary, Ross, Christina, Tom, Kim, Scott, and step great grandchildren, August, River, Zoey, Benjamin and Jules. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, his son John M. Moniz who passed in 1985, and six brothers and sisters.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. John Catholic Church, 3921 St. John's Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405.
