The Portsmouth Arts Guild will present art history lectures on Sundays, Jan. 22, Feb. 5 and 12 (snowdate is Feb. 26. The sessions, titled “The Birth of the Modern,” will examine the explosion of changes starting from the 1887 World’s Fair and the following period during the two World Wars and their effects on art produced in the 20th century.
Artists to be discussed include Matisse, Picasso, Pollock and Rothko, among others. The lecturer is editor and former gallery director Catherine Moran. Light refreshments will be provided. The cost is $5 per session for PAG members and $10 for non-members. Payment can be made in advance or the day of lecture at the door.
