Jose Bettencourt da Rosa, 88 of Siegel Street passed away March 26, 2016 at Silver Creek Manor. He was the husband of the late Ana Ermelinda (da Silva) da Rosa. Born Feteira, Faial, Acores, he was the son of the late Mariano and Filomena (da Silva) da Rosa.

He is survived by his son Joseph Da Rosa and his wife Alda; grandchildren Stacy Sousa, Tina Vollaro, Nichole Campos, Brittney Da Rosa and great grandchildren Colby Sousa, Abigail Sousa, Sydney Sousa, Calleigh Vollaro, and Jordan Campos. He was the brother of Maria Dina da Rosa and the late Maria Teresa Pereira and Alfredo da Rosa. Mr. da Rosa attended school in Portugal. He was the owner of J & J Sharpening and worked as a finish carpenter for Pearson Yachts before retiring.

His funeral services were held March 30 from the George Lima Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Luis Garcia Dutra at St. Elizabeth’s Church. Liturgical readings were by Ilda Caetano and Catarina da Rosa. The Prayer of the Faithful was read by Alice Beauregard. The offertory gifts were presented by Colby Sousa, Abigail Sousa and Sydney Sousa. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Jared Sousa, Brian Vollaro, Joseph Campos, Manuel da Rosa, Colby Sousa and Ronald Robert.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
