East Providence rallies for dramatic boys' volleyball playoff victory

Townies recover from 0-2 hole to defeat Chariho

RICHMOND — The last of the East Providence High School spring sports teams to participate in their respective playoff competitions, the boys’ volleyball team, took to the court Thursday night, June 7, in a Division I quarterfinal match on the road against Chariho.

And the fifth-seeded Townies defeated the fourth-seeded host Chargers in come-from-behind fashion by a narrow 3-2 count. East Providence earned a spot in the semifinals with its 23-25, 14-25, 25-15, 25-23, 15-11 victory.

Seniors Matt DaSilva and Dan Forsythe led the Townies in their dramatic rally. DaSilva had 20 kills and 10 defensive digs. Forsythe assisted on 25 points, added 17 digs and 15 kills for good measure.

"The kids never gave up they battled hard and played very scrappy," said EPHS head coach Dan Cabral. "They were diving all over the place, doing whatever they could to keep plays alive. They showed great leadership and determination. I couldn’t have been more proud of the team."

The win was also a considerable turn-around for the locals against the Chargers. Chariho swept the Townies, 3-0, in their two regular season meetings, doing so on the opening night of the season back in early April and to start the second half of the schedule at the beginning of May.

East Providence improved to 9-8 in Division I matches to date. The Townies face top-seeded Mount St. Charles in one semifinal match Wednesday night, June 16, at East Greenwich High, starting at 7 p.m. Second-seeded Hendricken meets third-seeded Coventry in the other semi that day, beginning at 5 p.m. Chariho’s season ended with a 9-8 record in league contests.
