Allegedly illegally accessed devices of female customer

EAST PROVIDENCE — In another local case involving a personal data breach, the East Providence Police Department announced the arrest of a Verizon technician on multiple charges Friday, July 13.
Derrick Calvano, 47 and of Dighton, Mass., was arrested and charged with Intentional Computer Access and Video Voyeurism.
Two days earlier, the EPPD received a complaint from a female who explained she had just moved into her apartment and was having Verizon installed. It was then that Mr. Calvano, who is the Verizon tech, was doing the installation.
According the victim’s complaint, at one point during the installation Mr. Calvano asked the female if she had any devices she wanted to connect with her Verizon services. The female stated she did and handed her personal IPad over to Mr. Calvano so he could connect her device.
A short time later, after handing over her IPad to Mr. Calvano, she received a text message on her IPhone alerting her to a video that had just been sent from her IPad from an unknown number with a 508 area code. The message, which was of a very sensitive and personal nature, had been sent during the time that Mr. Calvano had her IPad.
EPPD Detective, Jeffrey Mace, also a member of the Rhode Island Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, initiated an investigated into the complaint eventually resulting in the arrest of Mr. Calvano last Friday.
Detective Mace, along with the ICAC Task Force and the R.I. State Police Computer Crimes Unit, was also involved in the Flint Audio Video arrests that involved similar allegations against employees of the Middletown business. In that case, the personal data of women, especially, was targeted and distributed amongst Flint staff after customers sought to have their devices fixed.
One of those involved in the Rhode Island State Police’s as on-going investigation into a personnel data breach at Flint was Terrance M. Roy, 46, of 19 Metropolitan Park Ave., Seekonk. He was arrested by the RISP Computer Crimes Unit at Flint Audio Video, 77 East Main Road, Middletown. He was charged with: Accessing a computer for fraudulent purposes; Computer trespass; and Conspiracy.
The alleged Flint victims brought their computers, cell phones or other electronic devices to the store for repair and Mr. Roy or Geoffrey P. Preuit, also arrested in the case, would allegedly search the electronic files on those devices, without the victims’ knowledge or consent. The suspects allegedly took photos of nude images found on the customers’ devices and shared them with George Quintal, the store manager, and possibly other people, without the victims’ knowledge or permission. Additionally, all three employees allegedly took surreptitious photos of female customers while they were in the store, and those photos were then shared along with information about the digital device the customer was bringing in to be repaired.
The EPPD recommended consumers take caution whenever turning over their personal electronics to others for service and repairs.
