Cassar: Participate in our democracy

Posted

The first vote in the United States was for the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. That year a chosen few had the right to vote and all who could, voted. Now, all US citizens aged 18 and older have the right, yet a majority abstain from voting.

People give many reasons. Schedule, poor choice of candidates, indecision. With these excuses, people give up their power to have a voice in our democracy. Voting in a Primary election often determines more than the General election.

This year, if you usually sit out the Primary, I ask you - please don't. Your vote counts, no matter who you vote for. If you haven’t decided, ask a friend you trust or do some research. If your schedule’s a problem, vote ahead of election day by emergency ballot.

Participate in our democracy, not just on July 4th, but on September 12th as well.

Ms. Cassar is a candidate in the State House of Representatives District 66 primary.
