PORTSMOUTH — The victim of a fatal two-vehicle crash late Friday afternoon has been identified by Portsmouth police as 33-year-old Jose Mozes of 275 Turnpike Avenue in Portsmouth. He died after being thrown from the pickup truck he was driving at the corner of West Main Road and Union Street. The impact caused his northbound truck to roll over.

Police, who withheld identification of the victim or his home town until Saturday morning pending notification of next of kin, said the accident was reported shortly before 4 p.m. Rescuers took the man to Newport Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short while later. He was the only one in the truck.

No injuries were reported to the 17-year-old woman driving the second vehicle or to her two passengers. Police have not released the name of the driver because she is a juvenile or the names of her passengers, one of whom is also a juvenile. Deputy Chief Furtado did confirm that she lived in the Redwood neighborhood with is located across West Main from Union Street,

No traffic citations or charges have resulted, and Deputy Police Chief Jeffrey Furtado said it may take several weeks for the investigation team to reach conclusions, including about whether one of the vehicles might have gone through a red light or about the speeds involved. That effort is being let by Portsmouth Lt. Steve Cofield.

He did confirm Monday that Mr. Mozes’ 2004 Toyota Tacoma pickup was northbound and that the young woman’s 2005 Toyota Prius was pulling out of Redwood Road onto West Main. There were no indications that alcohol or drugs played a part (an autopsy was due to be conducted Monday on the victim).

The crash happened at rush hour and forced the closure of West Main Road for nearly two hours. Traffic backed better than a mile on West Main, side streets and even on Burma Road as rescuers and investigators did their jobs. Middletown police directed northbound traffic onto Greene Lane and Burma Road.

Portsmouth police and the Aquidneck Island Accident Reconstruction team are continuing their investigation of the accident.
