PORTSMOUTH — Police received 15 reports of identity thefts from Portsmouth residents over six days last week.

In each case, it was the person’s debit card or checking account number that had been stolen and used to make purchases. Some victims had multiple charges to their accounts. Most victims lost about $500 but some had their accounts charged as much as $1,300.

The purchases were predominantly made at Walmarts, but others were in Kmart, McDonald’s and Target, from places in Georgia, Maryland, Florida, Alabama and Pennsylvania. There was also a charge to a pharmacy in Quebec and on a Web site based in Bangkok, Thailand.

Deputy Police Chief Jeffrey Furtado said these identity thefts are under investigation. Police have been following reports of identity thefts for the past two months. In reports prior to last week’s thefts, some of the victims were not from Portsmouth.
