William W. “Jay” Humphrey Jr., 49, of Portsmouth, died Tuesday, March 9, 2010, from complications after a bone marrow transplant. For the past 24 years, he was the loving husband of Katherine “Kammy” (Merriman) Humphrey and father of his daughter Katie Humphrey and son Will Humphrey.

Born in Fall River, a son of William W. Sr. and Marilyn R. (Richardson) Humphrey of Tiverton, he spent his youth in Tiverton, moving to Portsmouth over 15 years ago. He was a 1979 graduate of St. George’s School in Newport and the University of Vermont, cCass of 1983.

Mr. Humphrey was president of Humphrey’s Building Supply in Tiverton and was very active in his community. He served on numerous boards including the Newport Preservation Society, Portsmouth Public Education Foundation, RI Foundation Advisory Committee of Newport County, Big Brothers, LMC Finance Committee, Child and Family Services and Newport County Chamber of Commerce. He was past president of the Potter League, Newport Rotary Club and a trustee of Bank Newport.

An avid athlete, he often skied at Okemo Mountain in Ludlow, Vt., and was a member of the Sakonnet Golf Club and the Warren’s Point Beach Club.

In addition to his wife, children, and parents, he is survived by his brother ,Scott R. Humphrey of Tiverton, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was the uncle of Ryan, Nikki, Todd, Maizie, Sam, Andrew, Molly, Singne, Rodger, George and Jasper.

His family will greet friends at his parents’ residence, 75 Sunset View Drive Tiverton, on Saturday, March 13 and Sunday, March 14, from 2-4 p.m. His Memorial Service will be held Monday, March 15 at 1 p.m. in his church — United Congregational Church, The Commons, Little Compton.
