On Saturday, Nov. 7, the Ocean State Montessori School (located on Grove Avenue) will host two performances of “Music For A Green Planet,” a collection of classic folk songs performed by jazz musician Hayes Greenfield with a “green” twist.

Like his rendition on the class “she’ll be coming around the mountain when she comes.”

“We’ll be cruising in our hybrids when she comes,” sings Mr. Greenfield.

“We’ll be getting better mileage when she comes. We’ll be part of the solution, ‘cause we’re making less pollution, we’ll be cruising in our hybrids when she comes.”

Erica Douglass, director of Ocean State Montessori School, said the school is excited for the show. Last year, students at Montessori got a taste of the music through a CD.

“A lot of students already know some of the lyrics,” Ms. Douglass said.

Aside from enjoying fun folk songs with environmentally friendly words, Ms. Douglass said Montessori is always trying to be “ecologically aware.”

Earlier this year, a small business created by middle school students at Montessori rolled out a number of environmentally friendly products. They made candles from lip balm along with air fresheners and hand creams from all natural products. They also made toys from eco-friendly wood for sale within the school community.

Mr. Greenfield said he wanted to record a “green” album for quite some time before “Music For A Green Planet” came out in 2008.

“As a world citizen, humanist and musician who cares about our world, I produced this CD in an effort to make a difference, help increase awareness of our current global emergency and promote available solutions in our effort to preserve our planet,” Mr. Greenfield said. “The songs concern solar power, wind energy, hydro-electric, geothermal, bio fuels, hybrid cards and buying fresh, locally grown organic produce. They give kids ideas about what can be done.”

Two performances of the show will take place at 1 and 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at a cost of $7 for children under 16 and $12 for adults. All proceeds from the event go towards new programs, enrichment activities and special visitors to Montessori, a non-profit institution.
