Girls' Volleyball: Townies take down Rams at the wire
East Providence beats LaSalle, claims One-North title

PROVIDENCE — The East Providence High School girls’ volleyball team completed its 2009 regular season Thursday night, Oct. 29, on the road against LaSalle by finishing off a season sweep of the Rams with a 3-2 victory.

The Townies, winners of the Division One-North regular season title, rallied to defeat the two-time defending state champs by the scores of 23-25, 25-14, 19-25, 25-15 and 16-14. East Providence finished its regular slate with a 17-1 record while the rival Rams finished at 13-5.

“The team learned a lot about their resolve and willingness to fight from behind tonight, as these will be keys to playoff success,” EPHS head coach Alex Butler wrote in his wrap-up of the match on the school website.

According to Butler’s summary, the Townies played a roller coaster match with numerous hitting errors, 30 in total, 10 net calls, and an overall lack of execution.

The Rams, holding their Senior Night, took East Providence to the limit. LaSalle led 14-11 in the fifth and final game before Alex Amaral toed the line for the locals and served for five consecutive points to help the Townies rally.

Amanda Cabral had a team-high 21 kills for the locals. The quartet of Jessica Amaral, Ashley Curti, Alex Amaral and Cabral combined for an outrageous 97 digs. Alex Amaral also had a season-high 35 assists.

East Providence will be the second seed out of a 12-team field in the upcoming Division One state championship tournament. The Townies take the next week off before hosting a quarterfinal round match, Nov. 6, against an opponent to be determined at 6:30 p.m.

The Townies locked up the One-North title two nights earlier with another road win, this one a much easier 3-0 victory over host Woonsocket, Oct. 27. East Providence won the match by the scores of 25-7. 25-5 and 25-10. Cabral and Kim Thomas led the Townie hitters with five kills each. Cabral also had five service aces. Jess Amaral had eight digs. Alex Amaral had 19 assists.
