Served in WAVES, traveled the world
Joan McGivney Platte, 80 of Tiverton, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 at the R.I. Veterans Home in Bristol. She was the wife of Capt. William A. Platte, USN (Ret.) for 57 years.
They were married at NAS Moffett Field, California, where they both served in Naval aviation. She was a flight orderly on Navy transport aircraft.
Born on Staten Island, N.Y., to Bernard F. and Mary D. McGivney, Joan graduated from Curtis High School in 1947. She worked on Wall Street until enlisting in the WAVES “to see the world.” This she did, as flights — many Medevac — from Korea, ranged over the U.S., to Hawaii, Alaska, the Azores, and Morocco. As a Navy wife, Joan traveled even further.
In Tiverton, Joan delivered Meals on Wheels and was a Neighborhood Friendly Visitor. She belonged to the Tiverton Garden Club and the Women’s Club of Newport County. She loved to fly, sail, paint and garden.
Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Stephen J. Platte of Portland, Or.; three daughters, Catherine Morehead, P.A., of Bridgeport, W.V., Ruth Elardo of Naples, Fla., and Margaret Robinson of Pawcatuck, Conn.; 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was predeceased by a son, David McG. Platte in 1982. Her three sisters, Rita, Bernis and Carol, survive.
Visitation is Friday from 3-4:30 and 6-7:30 at the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home, 462 Main Road, Tiverton. Her funeral will be Saturday, Oct. 31, with a 10 a.m. Mass at St. Christopher’s Church.Burial will be in Pocasset Hill Cemetery.
