WARREN — Warren town councilors asked (BCWA) Bristol County Water Authority Executive Director Pasquale DeLise to explain to residents why there was a breach in water purity and what steps the agency is taking to provide clean water to the region during a Tuesday night meeting.

On Sunday, a water sample taken from a Barrington sink tested positive for E. coli bacteria. On Tuesday morning, an advisory to boil water before consumption was issued by the state.

The BCWA has set up a water stations at the distribution center on Child Street and also one in Riverside's Crescent Park to give out free water to those who have the ability to haul in big tanks. Right now the

The water advisory has impacted local businesses, including restaurants and coffee shops, some of which closed. Mr. DeLise said the closings are “unfortunate,” however if samples taken throughout the next three days prove clean, the ban will be lifted after the weekend.

“Hopefully we can put this behind us this weekend,” said Mr. DeLise. “We expect all negative samples and the state will lift the advisory this weekend.”

Some residents complained that they were not given adequate notice about the advisory, since the sample indicating contamination was taken on Sunday and residents were alerted on Tuesday morning — giving them a two-day window to ingest the public water.

During the meeting, Warren resident Dale Borges stood up to tell Mr. DeLise her sister has a sensitive heart condition which forces her to take four types of antibiotics before going to the dentist. She wondered aloud if the contaminated water could kill her.

“If that water had affected her heart, people go to jail for less. It’s attempted murder,” said Ms. Borges.

Mr. DeLisi said he had not heard of any residents getting sick.

Moreover, residents were still unhappy with the delay in communication.

“Two days ago, when you got the sample, no one was informed ... I think you should take something off my water bill,” said Ms. Borges.

Mr. DeLise said he followed state protocol and that legal procedures were followed. Under normal circumstances, the Bristol County Water Authority tests the water once a month. When asked by residents why they don’t test more often, he said the tests cost money.

The residents of Bristol County should be immediately told of test results. First BCW jeopardize our health over the long weekend by not informing us. Then if they get a safe test result on Friday we have to wait until Monday to hear about it. Nice folks.

why the hell crescent park for the first station.....there's no mention of riverside oe east providence having to boil.so before it's set up in warren bristol residents have to drive to riverside to get water.Just another screwed up local/goverment agency. Thanks for the weekend glass-fulls of e-coli!

They have to take the water from a completely different system so it’s not contaminated. . That’s why it will be in Riverside.

This is another reason like I, and so many others, have left this crappy area and state. The most incredibly incompetent people running things so incompetently, more so than ANYWHERE in our country! "Youse needs to vote for my cousin Manny", or "Aye, Vinny, gives my cusin a job too, youknowadimean?". Have a drink on me, douchbags!

understandable to take from riverside, but why not take it from there and have it transported to warren bristol residents. paying for water you can't drink now have to burn gas to get water you can drink. whats wrong with this picture,

They only test the water once a month? That's not a whole hell of a lot of quality control. So a mistake is made in treatment and they don't know that for up to 30 days?

Simple water tests do not cost that much. This is pure negligence. Lets remember the ballot box, time for a whole sale change.

If you are a healthy person a little bit of this e. coli will do nothing but give you an upset stomach. Quit COMPLAINING!! I'm still drinking the water and I am a medical professional I know and understand the risks!! You people really Grind My Gears!!!

9/10/09, 03:26 PM

A medical pro, eh?

Swine flu is OK too, if you are basically a healthy person!

Problem is, a lot of people are NOT healthy...which is exactly why people like you have a job......circular logic.

If everyone was healthy we could drink the water AND save on you and all the other medical pros.

I contacted the health dept.. You cannot hand wash your dishes without rinsing them with boiling water.

I bought my property in 1999, seems like the water supply has been an issue for many yrs. guess I'm wondering why the town or state has tolerated the inept leadership of the "Municipal operations", The homeowners have been held hostage by them. I learned of the EColi infraction after passing the Channel 12 news vehicle in the Barrington commuter lot Tue. late aftn. & then viewing the 5:00 news report. I'm wondering why the Director did not inform residents earlier and also why they waited 2 days to provide alternate water to the residents. The town needs to institute controls. Also from a P.R. perspective, the director thinks it's ok for people to get sick because his team dropped the ball with their controls? is ...this is just unacceptable & incompetent! the town needs to evaluate this type of behavior & . "Mr. DeLise said. “This is not a life or death thing here,” he said. “This is an E. coli sample out of 600 samples. This is not a matter of life or death. The worse situation that can happen is that they can have diarrhea.”

You should be yelling about the state doh not your local water system. One test, ONE, was all it took for the boil order. There were no positive tests up stream or below this site and retesting of the same site turned up no positive at the same site. The positive could have been because the employee just use the bathroom and didn't wash his hands or put the cap down on a surface that wasn't sterile. All not SOP for testing but possible. If there is no positive test up or below stream then why the boil order? It's nonsense, but the DOH will tell you "We have to stay on the safe side!"
