George Sisson: A life well lived
Article Tools

To the editor:

Seldom does someone leave such a varied and accomplished legacy as George Sisson has for his state and community. What I will remember about George, however, is not so much what he did but rather who he was. He had a great personality, always warm and friendly and his enthusiasm for whatever he was doing at the moment was evident. George had style, but he also had substance. He was an innovator and a pioneer in electronic media, yet he was also very interested in preserving the past. He followed his successful business career with an equally successful “retirement:” Delegate to the 1986 Constitutional Convention, authoring an amendment guaranteeing public access to the shore, membership on the Coastal Resource Management Council, Chair of Save the Bay and President of the Bristol Historical Society. He also played key roles in gathering support for the East Bay Bike path, the preservation of Coggeshall Farm and Linden Place, and especially the Bristol Statehouse.

For George, the success of the project was the most important thing. He never let ego get in the way of getting the job done. That attitude was one of the keys to his success in his civic activities.

In short, George set a great example of how to live life well. I know he will be sadly missed not only by his family and friends, but also by his beloved Town of Bristol and State of Rhode Island.
