Locals have mixed results in consolation round bouts
LINCOLN — Dan Abram came up shy in his pursuit of an individual title as the Barrington High School junior fell to Kyle Morgan of Exeter-West Greenwich, 10-3, in the 160-pound final at the 2009 State Wrestling Championship Meet held Saturday night, Feb. 28, at the CCRI-Lincoln Fieldhouse
Abram held the early position advantage, but was unable to score. Morgan, who lost to Abram a week ago in the Division Two Sectional final, got on the board first with a reverse take-down. Abram escaped from a hold for a point and trailed 2-1 at the end of the opening two-minute period.
"I think if Dan finished that first take-down that he was really deep in on, if he takes him down there, I think it's a whole different match," said BHS head coach Drew Genetti. "And then Dan got a little sloppy, he was trying to go (for the) big (move) and it didn't happen. But (Morgan) is good."
In the second, Abram escaped to begin the period to level the match. It proved the last time the two were equal. Morgan scored on another reverse take-down to lead 4-2 then added a near-fall for two more points and a 6-2 margin by the end of the stanza.
Morgan added another escape and a take-down to open up a commanding 9-2 edge to start the third, basically ending the match with just over 90 seconds remaining.
As a top-three finisher in his weight class at states, Abram advances to the New England Championship Meet next weekend in New Haven, Conn.
In the consolation round previous to the finals, only Mt. Hope's Zach Ziobro earned a victory. The junior finished his season with the 107th win of his career, 7-2, over Coventry's Aric D'Allesio-Dup to place fifth at 130 pounds.
At 103, East Providence freshman Jacob Burrows dropped a 9-8 decision to Scituate's Katlin Bouyssou in the third-place match.
Barrington's Tim Kazanjian also fell in the third-place match at 112, 6-5, as did Portsmouth's Remy Alves at 152, 4-1.
East Providence's Joao Vicente and Jared Burrows each lost their fifth-place matches; Vicente by pin in 3 minutes, 13 seconds at 119 and Burrows by decision, 12-3, at 140.

EARLY SATURDAY RESULTS
Abram advanced to the championship with a 18-7 victory over South Kingstown’s Nick Finan in the semifinals earlier in the afternoon. Abram very nearly ended the match by pin late in the second period then survived a brief scare early in the third when Finan almost turned the tables and got a pin. Abram, however, reversed out and later added a take-down for the final points of the match.
East Providence freshman Jacob Burrows will have plenty of eyes on his consolation final match at 103. Burrows faces the darling of the event, Katlin Bouyssou of Scituate. One of two females in the meet, West Warwick's Karissa Greig being the other, Bouyssou defeated North Providence’s Nick Pizzi in her semi. Burrows defeated North Kingstown’s Christian Heibner, 13-7, in his consi semi. Burrows led 5-2 at the end of one period, which included a near pin. He upped his lead to a commaning 10-5 at the end of two.
Portsmouth senior Remy Alves will also wrestle in the consi final at 152. Alves, who only returned to the mat from an elbow injury with two weeks to go in the season, lost his first bout Friday night, but wrestled all the way back to the third-fourth-place match. Alves defeated Smithfield’s Darien Moranta, 8-0, in the consi semis. The victory avenged a loss to Moranta at last week’s Division Two Sectional event.
At 112, Barrington Tim Kazanjian, likewise, earned a berth in the consi finals with his narrow, 6-5 decision over South Kingstown’s Roberto Albino. The score was tied at three heading into the third period. Albino earned a point for an escape to take the lead. Kazanjian answered with a reverse take-down for three points to regain the edge, 6-4. Albino earned another point for an escape in the final seconds before time expired.
East Providence’s Joao Vicente (119) and Jared Burrows (140) each lost their consi semis and will wrestle in the fifth-sixth-place match in their classes. Mt. Hope’s Zach Ziobro also lost his consi semi and will do the same at 130. Ziobro’s effort was the deepest of the weekend for the Huskies.
