−Scenes from the Nativity @ Saint Martin's Episcopal Church7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Sine Nomine choral ensemble
Scenes from the Nativity
Sine Nomine choral ensemble welcomes Joseph Fort in his first season as artistic director as they present Scenes from the Nativity. Performances will be on Saturday, December 14 at 7:30 pm at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Providence, RI, and on Sunday, December 15, at 3:00 pm at Grace Episcopal Church, 133 School St., New Bedford, MA.
Fort writes “For the first concert in its twentieth-anniversary season, Sine Nomine visits one of the most famous scenes of all time—the Nativity. The group first sets the stage by way of medieval plainchant, Renaissance polyphony and twentieth-century minimalist music written for Advent, the preceding season of anticipation and expectation. In the second half, this growing restiveness gives way at last to elation at the birth: each of Poulenc’s beautiful Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël is paired with an earlier setting of the same text by the likes of Byrd, Palestrina and Victoria.”
Starting with the triumphant announcement, “Hodie Christus natus est,” Christ is born today, then dwelling at the Christmas scene as the shepherds and wise men visit, the concert closes with with two stylistically different settings of “O magnum mysterium,” – O great mystery, both much-loved and moving.
In addition to his role with Sine Nomine, Fort is Resident Conductor of the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum and Director of Music at Grace Church, Newton MA. He is a teaching fellow in Harvard’s Music Department and a resident tutor in Eliot House. As an organist he has broadcast on UK and US radio, and is in demand as an accompanist. He is a graduate of Cambridge University, where he was the organ scholar of Emmanuel College.
A reception will follow each performance so audiences will have the opportunity to greet Mr. Fort.+7:30 pmScenes from the Nativity @ Saint Martin's Episcopal Church
