The Orlo Avenue Elementary Playground Committee has finalized the plans for the new playground and has scheduled the community build for September 21 – 23rd. A neighborhood meeting was held on September 12th to share the plans and designs. The neighbors support the playground and made comments/suggestions relative to keeping the kids and the community safe.

Over the last year we have received remarkable support for the Orlo Avenue Elementary playground initiative. As the transformation is almost complete we are seeking volunteers to help us with the build. We need assistance with digging holes, building and setting up the play structure, painting and other miscellaneous tasks. Volunteers are needed for the following times:

      • Friday, 9/21/12: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm – digging holes, unload/set-up equipment
      • Saturday, 9/22/12: 7:00 am – 6:00 pm – digging holes, set-up structure, painting
      • Sunday, 9/23/12: 7:00 am – we are finished!

If you are interested in volunteering you don’t need to stay the whole time, the above times are when we will be at the school working. You may show up when you are available during the above times or if you have any questions about volunteering, please call Orlo Avenue Elementary School at (401) 435-7834. We are very grateful for the community support we have and continue to receive. Thank you!

    2. “September Light” Flower Show @ Dedee Shattuck Gallery
      10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Expert gardeners from Marion, Mass. to Little Compton will participate in the show, presented under the auspices of the Garden Club of America to celebrate the warm, rich colors of autumn on the Southcoast. There will be flower arrangements, a horticultural competition, a “Men’s Challenge” category and photography exhibits. It’s co-sponsored by the Little Compton Garden Club.

    3. Fish Bake @ Bliss Four Corners Congregational Church

    5. “The Goat or Who is Sylvia?” @ 2nd Story Theatre
      6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward Albee’s daring drama will open 2nd Story Theatre’s 2012-13 season. Albee’s 2002 Drama Desk and Tony Award-winning play is guaranteed to press every button and to provoke usually open-minded audiences to question their own moral attitudes and limits of tolerance. Says artistic director Ed Shea, who will play 50-year-old architect Martin, “This persistently provocative play is for only the most stalwart of theatergoers. Pearl-clutchers beware.” Mark Peckham will direct.

      Previews are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21-22, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23. Regular performances are 7 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 3 p.m. Sundays (additional performance 7 p.m. Sept. 30), Sept. 27 to Oct. 21.

    6. Lecture by Paul K. Chappell @ Bristol Statehouse
      7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Capt. Paul K. Chappell, West Point graduate, Iraq war veteran, author and peace activist, will speak on “Why World Peace is Possible: A Soldier’s Perspective.” The talk is sponsored by East Bay Citizens for Peace and co-sponsored by Rhode Island Progressive Democrats of American and American Friends Service Committee/South East New England.
