    1. Dollars & Sense: Real World Strategies for Paying for College @ Seekonk Public Library
      6:30 pm – 7:45 pm

While students are busily preparing college applications and waiting for those thick envelopes, many parents are anxiously looking for ways to pay for their child’s dream school.  Dollars & Sense is here to help!  Join us on Wednesday, October 17 at 6:30 pm for the tools you will need to help pay for your child’s education and still be able to retire.

Studies have shown that earning a college degree can result in more than a million dollars more earnings over a lifetime than not earning a college degree. But with top schools costing $50,000 a year or more, how can anyone afford to go?

Robert Lo Re knows what it is like to budget for your child’s future as well as your own.  In this session you will learn about real world strategies to pay for what could be you and your child’s greatest investment, including scholarships, loans, 529 plans, and more.

If a college is in the future for your child, do not miss this event!

This event is open to the public, but registration is required.  Call the library at (508) 336-8230 or visit www.seekonkpl.org to register.

Join us today and be prepared for tomorrow!

    2. “Project Home,” Reconstructure Celebrates the Sojourner Collection @ Reconstructure
      5:00 pm – 7:45 pm
Project Home celebrates the Sojourner Collection on Thursday, Oct. 18th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Reconstructure (96 Calverley Street) in Providence.  The Sojourner Collection is a permanent art collection generously donated by local artists to help improve the lives and environments of victims of domestic violence. Reconstructure, (all woman-owned Providence interior design firm) Sojourner House (RI’s leading advocate and resource for victims of domestic abuse) and our local art community join their aesthetic and ethical sensibilities to help women and children in transition rebuild a notion of home that is positive, personal and inspiring. One of the easiest and most accessible ways to modify and personalize one’s environment is through the incorporation of artwork in everyday life.
In celebration of amazing local artist talent and donated work, the Sojourner Collection will be revealed to the public and featured in Gallery Night Providence. The evening’s festivities include refreshments from local vendors, music and an opportunity to meet and hang with members of the community. Join us in this effort to inspire through art. In support of victims of domestic violence, this event will be held in October, the nationally recognized Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

    6. Seekonk Celebrates: Read! Presents American Diner History @ Seekonk Public Library
      6:00 pm – 7:15 pm

Seekonk Celebrates: Read! continues its celebration of Seekonk and Richard Russo’s novel Empire Falls with a fun discussion of New England Diner History.

Daniel Zilka, founder of the American Diner Museum, will join us to discuss the important role New England has played in the history of American diners.

As any fan of the Food Network’s Diners, Dives, and Drive-Ins knows, no two diners look the same and each one has a unique attention grabber to ensure people stop in and eat.

Miles Roby, Richard Russo’s main character in Empire Falls, understood this and tried to update his diner with a new menu with lots of flair.  Massachusetts has a particular fondness for diners and has even considered putting a diner on the back of its second state quarter.

Be sure to join us as we celebrate this fascinating food tradition!  We will have items to take home and more surprises this evening.  This event is free and open to the public thanks to a sponsorship from the Friends of the Seekonk Public Library.   Registration is required.  Call the library to reserve your space today at (508) 336-8230 or visit www.seekonkpl.org.

    7. Haunted Hallows and Monsters’ Lairs @ Riverside Branch Library
      6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Rhode Islander M. E. Reilly-McGreen, author of “Rhode Island Legends: Haunted Hallows and Monsters’ Lairs,” will tell ghoulish stories of the state’s most haunted places and the ones that helped define Rhode Island’s ghostly heritage and supernatural history. She’s an award-winning journalist and high school English teacher. Paperback copies of the book will be available for sale and signing.
