Agenda

  1. Oct
    18
    Thu

    1. Program on Green Eating @ Green Valley Country Club
      5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Casey Riley, chief operating officer of the Newport Harbor Corp./Newport Restaurant Group, and Chef Jonathan Cambra from Castle Hill in Newport, will help participants understand the hows and whys of eating in an environmentally friendly way. RSVP to Courtney Huth as space is limited.

    2. Seekonk Celebrates: Read! Presents American Diner History @ Seekonk Public Library
      6:00 pm – 7:15 pm

Seekonk Celebrates: Read! continues its celebration of Seekonk and Richard Russo’s novel Empire Falls with a fun discussion of New England Diner History.

Daniel Zilka, founder of the American Diner Museum, will join us to discuss the important role New England has played in the history of American diners.

As any fan of the Food Network’s Diners, Dives, and Drive-Ins knows, no two diners look the same and each one has a unique attention grabber to ensure people stop in and eat.

Miles Roby, Richard Russo’s main character in Empire Falls, understood this and tried to update his diner with a new menu with lots of flair.  Massachusetts has a particular fondness for diners and has even considered putting a diner on the back of its second state quarter.

Be sure to join us as we celebrate this fascinating food tradition!  We will have items to take home and more surprises this evening.  This event is free and open to the public thanks to a sponsorship from the Friends of the Seekonk Public Library.   Registration is required.  Call the library to reserve your space today at (508) 336-8230 or visit www.seekonkpl.org.

    3. Haunted Hallows and Monsters’ Lairs @ Riverside Branch Library
      6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Rhode Islander M. E. Reilly-McGreen, author of “Rhode Island Legends: Haunted Hallows and Monsters’ Lairs,” will tell ghoulish stories of the state’s most haunted places and the ones that helped define Rhode Island’s ghostly heritage and supernatural history. She’s an award-winning journalist and high school English teacher. Paperback copies of the book will be available for sale and signing.

    4. Recycling Presentation @ Essex Library
      6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Learn about Rhode Island’s new single-stream recycling program from Kevin Proft, manager of ecoRI’s Green Team. The presentation is made possible by a grant from The Rhode Island Foundation and sponsorship from Waste Management and Save The Bay. Space is limited, so call to reserve a spot.

    5. RWU Common Reading Presentation to Feature Family of Henrietta Lacks, Subject of 2012 New York Times Bestseller @ Roger Williams University
      7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Was it right for doctors to harvest a poor black tobacco farmer’s cells without her permission? Opinions vary widely, but one thing is clear – if scientists hadn’t challenged the ethical divide with Henrietta Lacks in 1951, modern medicine might not look the same today.

On Thursday, October 18, David “Sonny” Lacks, will share his mother’s story – immortalized in Rebecca Skloot’s 2010 New York Times bestseller, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” – during Roger Williams University’s annual Common Reading presentation.

Skloot’s book chronicles the story of the woman known to scientists as HeLa. Her cells, taken without her knowledge, became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in-vitro fertilization and more. The bestseller raises questions about exploitation and ethics in scientific experimentation, subjects that are only escalating in importance in contemporary society.

The visit by Sonny Lacks comes as part of the Common Reading program, an annual tradition at Roger Williams University. Faculty, staff and first-year students read a selected text each summer and engage in discussions on the book during the fall semester.

In appearances across the country, Sonny Lacks has shared with audiences what it meant to find out – decades after the fact – that his mother’s cells were being used in laboratories across the world, bought and sold by the millions. He puts a personal face on issues such as the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics and the legal battles over informed consent.

The Common Reading presentation will take place on Thursday, October 18, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Recreation Center on the University’s Bristol campus at One Old Ferry Road. The event is free and open to the public with a ticket. Due to anticipated demand and limited space, some guests may be directed to satellite locations on campus to watch via live video feed.

Please call (401) 254-3210 to reserve a ticket or for more information.

    6. “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” @ Roger Williams University recreation center
      7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join Roger Williams University in celebrating this year’s Common Reading text with an appearance by David “Sonny” Lacks, son of Henrietta Lacks, the subject of Rebecca Skloot’s bestseller. Sonny Lacks has captivated audiences across the country, talking about his mother and her important contribution to science. Call to reserve your free ticket.

    2. Authors Kenn and Kimberly Kaufman @ Audubon Environmental Education Center

The Fall season is upon us and that means colder weather and the need for warmer clothes.  With that in mind,  Boy Scout Troop 6, St. Luke’s Parish, and the Knights of Columbus will be holding a coat drive on Saturday, October 20th from 9am-12pm. We will be accepting cleaned, gently used coats, hats, gloves.   This year we will have two drop off locations:  St Luke’s basement and Holy Angels Church on Maple Ave.  Donated items will benefit the VA Hospital, Amos House, and St. Patrick’s Church all located in Providence and our own TAP-IN.  Canned goods will also be graciously accepted.

If you have any questions please contact Tina Peck at 368-9924 or Gus Morrelli 465-2488.
