PORTSMOUTH — The collegiate rugby tournament known as The Beast of the East returned Saturday and Sunday for its annual visit to Glen Farm.

As always, the Portsmouth Fire Department’s rescue crew was on standby to treat players for the general mayhem that resulted.

The injuries were down from previous years, however. Fire Chief Michael Cranson said his department made only six transports to local hospitals, with 15 injured players refusing treatment.

“Most of the injuries involved lacerations and possible broken bones,” Chief Cranson stated in an e-mail to the Portsmouth Times. “The most serious injury involved someone being rendered unconscious from a hit.”
