When Tracy (Silva) Sweeney’s family moved to Nebraska when she was a sophomore in high school, she found it hard to say goodbye to Bristol.

“I came back all the time — for proms, homecoming,” said the would-be member of Mt Hope High School’s class of 1999. “I never really went away.”

While she attended schools in Nebraska and Pennsylvania, where she pursued advanced degrees in English education, it wasn’t until she was pregnant with twins in 2011 that she she looked into buying property here in town, with the idea that her expanded family was getting a little too large to couch surf their way through their frequent visits.

It was also around that time that her photography, previously a hobby, evolved into something more.

“I began taking on clients,” she said. “And my business really took off.”

Not long after, she converted a structure on her property to a skylit natural light studio. It gave her a professional location to take her business to the next level.

“I’ve cultivated a really neat business here in Bristol; a combination of private clients and commercial campaigns, speaking and teaching photography,” Ms. Sweeney said.

In just a handful of years, she has won international photography awards and seen her work featured in trade publications including Click, Digital SLR Photography, Rangefinder, and Professional Photographer. Her work has also appeared in The UK Daily News, and in advertising campaigns for Buy Buy Baby, Babies R’ Us, and Target Stores.

This month, Amherst Media is releasing a book of Ms. Sweeney’s photographs, “Kids: Photos to Brighten Your Day.”

“They contacted me after seeing my work in a feature in a wedding magazine,” she said. Calling it an exploration of “the magical world of youth,” the book, available for preorder at Amazon and Barnes and Noble, will be released on June 15.

“It’s great that I have been able to create this business here; it’s such a special location. Whether clients want a harbor setting, beach, great parks — we have it all.”
