The Huskies lose a nail biter 11-10 to South Kingstown

The Mt. Hope girls lacrosse team fell just short of the Division 3 championship, losing a heartbreaker to South Kingstown, 11-10, at Brown University stadium Saturday.

The Huskies had a one-goal lead with less than 8 minutes to play in the back-and-forth game, but could not contain the Rebels' constant attack, led by Sofie Zaloojian's 6 goals. Mt. Hope goal tender Margan Kane was under constant duress, facing 25 shots, 14 of which she turned aside, keeping the Huskies in the game.

After falling behind 3-0 to start the game, the Mt. Hope offense battled back to tie, then matched South Kingstown's attack throughout the game. The Huskies spread the offense around, getting goals from six different players, led by Alyssa Raposo with three goals and an assist. Jenna Cimbron scored two goals and assisted on another, and Grace Moclair added a pair.

The scoreboard see-sawed throughout the game, with neither team holding more than a two-goal lead the rest of the way.

After playing the first half to a 5-5 tie, Mt. Hope jumped out early to take the lead in the second half when Cimbron ran the length of the field, weaving her way around several Rebel defenders for an unassisted goal.

South Kingstown quickly tied the score, then took the lead, only to see the Huskies battle right back. In all, there were 7 ties throughout the game as neither side could put the other away.

Tied 10-10 with just a minute to play, South Kingstown took the lead for good when a Rebel attacker snuck one past Kane. But the Huskies weren’t done yet. After a steal in their own zone with 20 seconds left, the Huskies quickly made their way up the field with some nifty passing, getting Raposo the chance for one last shot. But the ball sailed just wide of the goal as the buzzer sounded.
