Hancock: Embracing hands-on learning in our schools

Posted

The collaboration between our elementary schools and the Herreshoff Museum, where fourth-graders take classes and sail at the museum, is a great example of what our schools need. The program connects our students to the environment around them and allows them to share something that is unique to their hometown. Programs like this build culture and pride while also helping students learn key academic concepts in an engaging way.

These are the types of programs and partnerships that I have developed over my career as an educator, including programs right here in our schools. As a member of the school committee, I would use my experience at crafting hands-on education programs to find more ways for our students to connect with the local and global community. We have a rich history and unique culture that we must tap into to build schools we are proud to call our own.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
