Nine years ago, then-Bristol Town Councilor Halsey Herreshoff warned his fellow councilors and safety officials about the dangers of the East Bay Bike Path crossing on Poppasquash Road. According to the Aug. 13, 2009, edition of the Bristol Phoenix, Mr. Herreshoff said he was concerned about the safety of “young bicyclists” at that intersection.

According to the Phoenix, Mr. Herreshoff said, “There’s a lot of children pedaling along there, and if we could do something more to ensure their safety, we might save a life.”

Those words proved prophetic on Tuesday, July 24, when a young boy was killed riding his bike through that intersection.

According to the Phoenix, Mr. Herreshoff requested additional signs or stripes placed across the road, and Police Chief Josue Canario recommended a yellow crosswalk sign be placed there as a temporary solution.

Contacted Wednesday and reminded of his comments in 2009, Mr. Herreshoff said, ““Ive always been concerned about the safety of hikers and bikers at that intersection … I wanted flashing lights and signage … It’s dangerous, and moreso if you add drivers who are unfamiliar with the road”

He added, “There ought to be a light that a biker can control with a push button. There ought to be more prominent signage on both sides.”
