Gary Benjamin Fillmore, 76, passed away on April 1, 2018, at the Rhode Island Veterans Home.

Born in Bristol, he was the son of the late Lloyd Chesley and Margaret Fillmore. He was the cousin of Harold Pedley, Wendy Krupa, Lorna Francis and the late Cheryl Bennett.

Mr. Fillmore was a graduate of Colt Memorial High School, Class of 1959. He served in the Marines during the Vietnam War and then went on to graduate from Roger Williams University. Gary was an avid sailor who loved just being on boats and could be found in Bristol Harbor in his spare time.

He was a native Bristolian, except for a brief tour of Texas for his CPA studies, and possessed the gift of a good sense of humor.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service held in Gary’s honor on Saturday, May 19, at 2 p.m. at the Rhode Island Veterans Home, 480 Metacom Avenue.

Arrangements are with the George Lima Funeral Home.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
