Eleanor Travers, 90, of Bristol

Mrs. Eleanor V. (Viera) Travers, age 90, of High Street, life-long resident of Bristol, R.I., passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 11, 2019, surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren. She was the wife of the late Dr. Edward P. Travers, who preceded her in death in August of 1977. 

Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, she was a daughter of the late Manuel and Helen (Miranda) Viera. Eleanor was a graduate of Colt Memorial High School, Class of 1947, and the Truesdale Hospital School of Nursing, formerly in Fall River and Mt. Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. A Registered Nurse, she practiced for many years at Truesdale Hospital and at the Rhode Island Veterans Home. In addition, she volunteered in Bristol, R.I., as a public school nurse.

She was a lifelong communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Bristol and remained very active with the church annual bazaar, Emmaus group, and supporting the Rose Hawthorne House. 

She is survived by four children, Eleanor T. Cox of Warren, and Maryelizabeth T. DaPonte, Stephany T. Silvia and Edward P. Travers, II, all of Bristol; seven grandchildren, Erin S. Cox, Christopher T. Cox, Benjamin K. DaPonte, Jacob K. DaPonte, Nicole R. (Silvia) Lyons,  Peter T. Silvia and Corey J. Silvia; and two great-grandchildren, Aidan and Ryan Cox. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Edward Jules Travers, and a brother, Manuel Viera, Jr.

Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Bristol, are Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019, at 9 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Wood St., Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol.

Visiting hours will be Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019, from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Church, 330 Wood St., or to Franklin Court Independent Living – Activities Fund, 150 Franklin St., both Bristol, RI  02809.
