The East Bay Co-op girls ice hockey team won a pair of games last week. The Eagles defeated the Burrillville Co-op team 4-1 on Wednesday, Feb. 13, and then knocked off the Smithfield Co-op team 8-2 on Thursday, Feb. 14.
Against Burrillville, East Bay scored two first period goals and opened a 2-0 lead. Rose Flaherty scored the first goal off assists from Maeve Harrington and Katherine Barker. Barker then added a goal of her own off an assist from Ella Hanley.
Burrillville cut the lead in half when Isabella Besser scored at the 4:59 mark, but Flaherty notched her second goal of the game later in the second period. Barker and Hanley assisted on the score.
Maddie Cox rounded out the scoring for East Bay with a short-handed goal late in the third period. Meanwhile, Ellee Kopecky made 22 saves in net for the Eagles.
East Bay vs. Smithfield
East Bay scored five goals in the first period and never looked back in an 8-2 blowout win over the Smithfield Co-op team.
Cox opened the scoring with an unassisted goal, and Barker followed about a minute later with a goal. Marissa Levreault made it 3-0 about 20 seconds later and East Bay went up 4-0 after Barker scored her second of the game at the 9:39 mark. Layla Rappaleye scored East Bay's fifth goal of the period off an assist from Sarah Yee, who had also assisted on Levreault's goal. Cox and Flaherty had assists in the first period.
Smithfield scored to open the second period, but East Bay responded with two more goals, as Flaherty and Cox found the back of the Smithfield net. Barker, Maddie Cornell and Flaherty also tallied assists in the second period.
In the final period, Smithfield scored first, but Barker responded with her third goal of the game, finishing with a hat trick. Cox had the assist.
Zoey Despines stopped 14 shots in the victory.
