Chatfield reps local golf with US Am performance

Wannamoisett player qualifies for match play, reaches Round of 32

EAST BAY — Wannamoisett’s Davis Chatfield certainly did his home layout and the area golf community proud last week with his performance at the 118th U.S. Amateur played over the renowned Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course.
Chatfield, of Attleboro and about to enter his sophomore year the University of Notre Dame, finished two rounds of stroke play qualifying in a share of 36th place at 2-over par then won his first outing in match play before falling to Stewart Hagestad in the Round of 32.
Chatfield carded rounds of 1-under 71 at Spyglass then shot 3-over 74 at Pebble. He next earned a convincing victory over Ryan Smith, 6-and-4, in the opening round of match play at Pebble Beach. Chatfield never trailed after Smith made a bogey to his par at the second. He won the last four holes to finish the front nine 5-up then later clinched the win with a birdie at the par 5 14th.
Hagestad, a mainstay in the US Am who hadn’t won an outing in match play in eight previous tries, took the lead on Chatfield in their Round of 32 contest when the latter made a double at the second. He, too, would not relinquish the lead, going 3-up at the turn before closing out the 4-and-3 win when Chatfield bogeyed the par 4 15th.
“It was certainly a special week at the Am, to have my whole family there and a bunch of friends and family rooting me on from back home was pretty cool,” Chatfield said of the experience. “I feel like my game was solid the whole week. I can definitely work on a few things before gearing up for the fall season. I don’t have any expectations set in stone for this year at Notre Dame, but I know that where my game is headed it should be a good one.”
Chatfield was coming off an impressive freshman year with the Irish. He was the team’s top finisher at its own Fighting Irish Classic and at the Kansas State Big Horn Invitational. His 72.75 strokes per round average for the season was the ninth lowest all-time in program history. Chatfield shot a blistering 11-under, two-day total at Ledgemont earlier this summer to finish as the medalist and top seed in the Rhode Island State Amateur before he was upset in the first round of match play, 1-up, by Claudio Soukamneuth. Late last month, he was the low Rhode Islander (even par, T6) at the New England Am played in Maine.
“No surprise as he’s played well all summer and during his freshmen year at Notre Dame,” Irish head coach John Handrigan said of Chatfield’s effort in California last week where he was also in attendance. “Davis is a very consistent player and drives it extremely straight, which was a huge advantage at Pebble Beach with the thick rough.”
Hagestad’s run ended in the Round of 16 with a 1-up loss to Isaiah Salinda. Viktor Hovland, of Norway and a junior at reigning national champion Oklahoma State, was the eventual champion, defeating Devon Bling, of UCLA, in the 36-hole final, 6-and-5.
R.I. Open
John VanDerLaan, of Connecticut and a recent graduate from Florida Southern, won the 87th Annual Rhode Island Open contested last week at Crestwood. VanDerLaan finished with a 13-under total to best runner-up and fellow Nutmeg Stater Geno Giancola by a stroke for the title and $3,000 first-place check.
Long-time professional and Cumberland native Brad Adamonis, who plays out of TPC Boston, was the low Rhode Islander, placing in a three-way share of third at 11-under. Jake Bauer, of Portsmouth and Montaup, was the next local in, finishing tied for seventh at 9-under.
Stroke Play recap
Two Metacomet players were crowned champions recently at the 35th Annual RIGA Stroke Play tournament contested in Thompson, Conn., at Connecticut National.
Jamie Lukowicz claimed the outright title with a birdie on the 54th-and-final hole to outlast Chris DeLucia, the latter playing on his home layout. Lukowicz finished with a three-round total of 7-under, 209 to defeat DeLucia by a stroke. Wannamoisett’s Jeff Giguere wound up in a three-way tie for third place at 3-under. Clubmate Tyler Cooke finished solo eighth at even par, 216. Former Metacomet player now back at Valley Brad Valois finished ninth alone at 1-over. And Metacomet’s Eric Marchetti placed just outside the top 10 in a share of 12th at 4-over.
Meanwhile, Darren Corrente provided Metacomet a sweep of trophies as he captured the Senior Division title by beating Mike Arter in a playoff. After both competitors finished regulation at 2-under, Corrente made a par on the first playoff hole to earn the victory. Another former Metacomet member, RIGA legend Paul Quigley finished fifth at 2-over. Wannamoisett’s Tom Goryl was among a group to finish at 11-over and in a share of seventh. Metacomet’s Dean Parziale placed solo 12th at plus-14.
Women’s Senior Am
The RIGA Women’s Senior Amateur championship was held at Green Valley in Portsmouth and was won by Potowomut’s Deb Cyronak by a stroke over Kay Bullock and Nancy Chaffee. Cyronak carded a 7-over 78 to win the title. Long of Agawam Hunt now playing out of Wannamoisett, Kibbe Reilly was fourth alone overall at 9-over, which was also good enough to top the 60-69-year-old division.
Four players with local ties rounded of the top 15 with Agawam Hunt’s Marisa Brown 12th at 16-over followed by Metacomet’s Gail Lederman at 17-over along with Wannamoisett’s Jane Geary and Agawam’s Deb Schmutzler at plus-18.
As well, another Potowomut player Angelo Brunero won the net division at 3-under. Wannamoisett’s Sharon Volpe shared third at even par.
Upcoming schedule
The next major men’s tournament of the RIGA schedule takes place in city at Wannamoisett when the 25th Mid-Amateur Championship is played on the Rumford layout August 28-29. A women’s major is also being held the same week as the Four-Ball Championship at Wanumetonomy in Middletown on August 27.
