Bristol volunteers will gather for sold-out Firemen's Ball

Volunteer firefighters will hold gala affair for the first time in about 30 years

It’s been approximately 30 years since the Bristol Volunteer Fire Dept. held its last Firemen’s Ball, but tomorrow night, 160 members of the department and their guests will file into the Bristol Yacht Club with hopes of reigniting interest in this once-popular event.

Bristol Fire Chief Michael DeMello, along with a group of local firefighters, came up with the idea to bring back the Firemen’s Ball after three decades of inactivity.

“We wanted to do something where we didn’t have to work, and that people would enjoy,” he explained. “The event is already a sellout, and we’re anticipating a great night all the way around.”

According to the vhief, the 2017 Firemen’s Ball will be a formal affair.

“We’ll all be in uniform,” he said. “This will be a nice night to rekindle old memories while enjoying an evening with many of our department members, some of who have never experienced something like this before.”

The Ball will be held from 6:30 to 11 p.m., and will include a sumptuous meal. Deejay Mike Goglia will provide a portion of the musical entertainment.

Chief DeMello pointed out that the Bristol Firemen’s Ball has a storied history.

“I know it used to be held at several other locations in town, including the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church Parish Center, and National Guard Armory,” he said. “And, I believe, the last time it was held, Dave Sylvaria was the fire chief.”

“Everybody has worked so hard to make this event a success,” the Chief added. “I’m sure it’s going to be a fun night for everybody.”
