Bristol promises full safety review after fatal bike path accident

Posted

Bristol Town Administrator Steven Contente released a statement Thursday afternoon expressing sympathy for the family of a young bicyclist killed on the East Bay Bike Path and promising safety improvements for bikers and motorists in that area.

Below is the full text of his statement:

"Dear Families, Residents, and Visitors of Bristol,

"It is with sincere sadness that I write this letter on behalf of the Town of Bristol's Elected Officials, Department Heads and Employees, as a result of Tuesday's terrible accident at the East Bay Bike path at Poppasquash Road that resulted in the loss of an innocent boy's life.
"At this time, the Town of Bristol is working with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM). We will be providing our local input in a DOT review and study to improve traffic safety on the bike path. The Town will also mirror any suggested improvements on those Town roads that intersect with the East Bay Bicycle Path.
"Words cannot express how sorry I am that this accident occurred. I will continue to pray for this young boy and his dear family and offer total commitment to make certain that any and all necessary and proper safety improvements are implemented.
"Yours sincerely and respectfully,
"Steven Contente Town Administrator"
