EThe Barrington High School girls tennis team slipped to 1-2 after losing 5-2 to East Greenwich on Monday afternoon, Sept. 17.

Barrington's number three singles player Elizabeth Wang won her match in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, against East Greenwich's Sophie Fulghum, and the Eagles' third doubles team of Alison Kostas and Julia Stanchina won their match in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

The second doubles team for Barrington, Hailey Walter and Meghan McDermott, pushed their opponents to three sets before losing 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. 

Barrington grabbed its first win of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 11, defeating Wheeler 5-2. Kate Robertson won her match at first singles, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, while Wang won in straight sets at third singles and Lauren Jay won her match at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-1. Walter and McDermott won their match at second doubles 6-0, 6-3, and Kostas and Stanchina won their match at third doubles, 6-1, 6-3.

Boys soccer

The Eagles trailed 1-0 with time running out in the second half against Hendricken, but Nick Rockwell scored with eight minutes left and helped Barrington salvage a 1-1 tie. Emmanuel Despines played well in goal for the Eagles, making nine saves against the undefeated Hawks.

The tie pushed Barrington's record to 0-2-1, following a 3-1 loss to East Providence on Tuesday, Sept. 11. Rockwell scored the Eagles' lone goal in the loss, while Matt Culligan notched the assist. Despines made six saves against the Townies.

Barrington was scheduled to play at Classical on Tuesday, Sept. 18.

Girls volleyball 

The Barrington High School girls volleyball team improved to 3-1 after defeating Cumberland High School 3-0 on Monday, Sept. 17. The Eagles rolled to a 25-18, 25-19, 25-17 victory.

Senior Maile Somera paced the Eagles with 17 kills and nine digs, while Grace Angelini finished the game with six kills, three service aces and three digs. 

Somera also played very will during the Eagles' 3-1 win over Prout (25-21, 25-20, 16-25, 25-20) on Friday, Sept. 14. The two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in girls volleyball in Rhode Island had 28 kills, five aces and 12 digs. Somera's teammate Dulce Mann had 11 digs and two aces.

Somera had 25 kills and 17 digs while helping the Eagles to a 3-1 victory over Cranston West on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Barrington won 25-16, 25-20, 17-25, 25-23.

Barrington is scheduled to host Cranston East on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

Boys cross country

The Barrington High School boys cross country team squared off against LaSalle Academy on Monday, Sept. 17, in an early season showdown. LaSalle managed the win, 23-34.

Brendan Fay was the top runner for Barrington, finishing the 3-mile course at Colt State Park in Bristol with a time of 16:56. Fay was third overall. Barrington freshman Holden Vaughan finished fifth overall with a time of 17:05, and Brian Donahue was sixth with a time of 17:28. Jamie Gunness finished eighth overall and fourth for Barrington with a time of 17:49. 

Girls cross country

Barrington had three of the top four finishers at a multi-team meet on Monday at Colt State Park in Bristol, and celebrated wins over LaSalle (17-42), Lincoln School (15-50), and Bay View (18-41).

Caroline Livingston was the top finisher, clocking a 19:07. Stephanie Chun was second overall with a time of 20:38, and Fiona Ainsworth was third for the Eagles and court overall with a time of 21:06. Lindsay Turgeon finished sixth overall with a time of 21:27, and Tess Gagliano was seventh with a time of 21:31. Reilly Curran rounded out the top 10 with a time of 21:38. 

Girls soccer

The Eagles defeated Cumberland 2-0 on Saturday, Sept. 15. Olivia Middleton and Kamryn Voutes each scored and Grace Muccino tallied an assist, while Jenna Park made seven saves.

Sarah Yee scored a game-tying goal with about 10 minutes left to play, helping the Eagles to a 3-3 tie against Coventry. Barrington trailed 2-0 at halftime and 3-1 in the second half, before Olivia Middleton and Yee netted goals. Cary Heterick also scored for Barrington, while Voutes, Bella Richardson and Yee had assists. Park finished with seven saves against the Oakers.

Football

Barrington struggled to stop Portsmouth High School quarterback Kyle Bicho on Friday night. Bicho ran for three touchdowns and threw for another, as the Patriots blanked the Eagles 27-0. The loss dropped Barrington's record to 0-1 in the division.

The Eagles will play their third straight road game on Friday, as they travel to Conley Stadium in Providence to battle Central High School. The Knights are 1-1 on the season, having defeated Cranston West 32-29 and lost to Mount Pleasant 32-30. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
