Ascencao: Protect our bay to protect our community

Posted

The Bay and our parks are at the heart of our community. Our economy and culture are all tied into the water. One of my first memories growing up, is going out on the boat and learning how to fish. I bet most people who grew up here have a similar experience.

We have to do everything we can to protect them for today and for future generations. I’ve kept that commitment by helping directly on cleanups and advocating at the State House against projects that would endanger the bay.

We must also do everything we can to protect ourselves from the effects of climate change. We already see the rising cost of inaction, with storms knocking out power for days and flooding becoming commonplace.

We need to both invest in clean energy and take steps now to mitigate the impact of severe weather on our homes and businesses.
Laufton Ascencao

Mr. Ascencao is a Democratic candidate for R.I. House of Representatives, District 68.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
