The R.I. Turnpike and Bridge Authority is warning motorists that due to the 4 Bridges Ride on Sunday, Sept. 17, early morning motorists on Aquidneck Island should be prepared for slight delays and traffic detours. 

The 4 Bridges Ride, a 26-mile charity bike ride hosted by the RITBA Foundation, will begin at 7 a.m., and police will begin blocking off some roads in the impacted areas as early as 4:30 a.m.

During the course of the 4 Bridges Ride, cyclists will pedal across the four bridges owned by RITBA — the Jamestown, Newport, Sakonnet and Mt. Hope Bridges — for a total of 26 miles. The ride begins at 7 a.m. at the “park-and-ride” lot on the North Kingstown side of the Jamestown Bridge and ends outside Roger Williams University on the Bristol side of the Mt. Hope Bridge.

From the park-and-ride, cyclists will travel to Route 138, across the 1.4-mile-long Jamestown-Verrazzano Bridge and through the toll plaza via the connector road. After crossing the Newport Pell Bridge, riders use the Downtown Newport ramp to enter Farewell Street. 

The ride will travel on Van Zandt St, Third Street and Connell Highway in Newport before connecting with Lexington Street and Chases Lane in Middletown. 

The cyclists will travel up Burma Road to Stringham Road onto West Main Road in Portsmouth, onto the Hummocks Avenue exit toward the Sakonnet River Bridge. 

Once over the bridge, the riders will turn around in Tiverton and cross back into Portsmouth and head toward the Mt. Hope Bridge on Anthony Road and Boyd's Lane.

All cyclists must abide by the rules of the road throughout the course, and they will, at times, share the road with motorists.

All proceeds from the event will benefit Save The Bay.
