According to neighbors and eyewitnesses, the fire broke out at approximately 10:15 p.m. The house almost immediately was consumed by flames. A witness said the last of the residents was removed from the home by first-responding East Providence Police and Fire Department personnel.

According to the owners of the residence, an elderly couple who were at the scene, there were six tenants living in the home. The couple, who referred to the large Victorian-style building as a “legal rooming house,” have owned the property for some 40 years.

Multiple engines and firefighters from East Providence fought the flames. They were assisted at some level by the neighboring Providence Fire Department. Upwards of six hoses, including two aerial ladder companies, were being used to control the fire, which was contained to the one property.

Acting EPFD Chief Oscar Elmasian was on scene, but unavailable for comment. The cause of the fire is as of yet unknown.

Return to later Sunday for further details.
