Ruth Spanjer Leland, of Pine Hill Assisted Living, Windham, NH, died Saturday, April 14, 2018 at the age of 99 1/2. She was born on Oct. 17, 1918 in Hillside, NJ. She was the daughter of the late Tillie and William Spanjer of Morristown, NJ and St. Petersburg, Fla. She lived in Riverside for 20 years, before moving to Barrington.  She was the wife of the late Forrest B. Leland. She leaves two daughters, Susan Quinn of Vero Beach, Fla. and Kathryn Luther of Windham, NH, five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Ruth graduated from Trenton State Teacher's College, in Hillwood Lakes, NJ, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in education. She was a prominent member of Bradley Hospital Corporation in East Providence, where she volunteered for 40 years. Ruth helped found a community relations committee that conducted tours to help acquaint the public with the hospital. Her other volunteer activities included: reader and driver for the blind, sorting books at the Barrington Library, driver for Tap-In, and she was a Girl Scout leader for her daughter's troop.

She was a member of the indoor tennis club in East Providence, founding member of Kendbrin Swim and Tennis Club, the first family type swimming club in New England, a member of the Barrington Women's Club and a member of the Barrington Congregational Church.

Ruth was an exceptional mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was extremely important to her. She will be greatly missed by all.

The family will hold a private get-together this summer to celebrate this wonderful, caring mother!
