Humor, intelligence and wisdom marked her life

Marie (Iavazzo) DeLuca of 38 Bagy Wrinkle Cove, Warren, RI, died peacefully at her home on Christmas Eve 2018, surrounded by her three loving children. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph DeLuca, MD of Providence.

Born in Medford, MA, Marie was the eldest daughter of Alfonso and Michelina (Tartaglia) Iavazzo, who immigrated to the US from Campania and Abruzzo, Italy. After the loss of her beloved mother at the age of 18, she graduated from Burdett College in Boston with an Associate’s Degree, commencing her work career at Esso Standard Oil. She later worked at the Department of Immigration and Naturalization in Boston assisting prospective citizens gain entry in the country. She married Joseph DeLuca, MD in 1950 after a brief courtship. She raised three children who, along with her husband, were the devoted focus of her life.

In addition to being a talented raconteur of the troubled times of The Greatest Generation, Marie loved literature and was an expert chef. Her humor, intelligence, and sage wisdom will live on in the memory of all whom she touched.

She is survived by three children, Joseph DeLuca, MD, Dana DeLuca Shechtman, Esq., and Debra DeLuca, Esq.; as well as her beloved grandchildren, Sarah, Emma and Jason Shechtman and Christian DeLuca; and her loving in-laws, Steven Shechtman, Esq. and Nicoletta DeLuca.

All friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration Service of Marie’s life on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the Carmelite Monastery, 25 Watson Avenue, Barrington, RI 02806 at 11:00 AM.
