Police responded to the Barrington River Bridge at about 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, after a man said he was going to jump from the bridge.

A woman called police to say she was with the man, and he was taking off his clothes and threatening to jump into the river. She stopped him from jumping off the bridge, and waited until police arrived. 

When officers arrived at the bridge, they told the 54-year-old man to put his clothes back on. The man stood up and began walking toward his clothes, but then leaped onto the railing and jumped into the river below.

Police officers quickly ran to the shoreline along Mathewson Road and helped pull the man from the water. Police said the man was OK; he was transported to the hospital.
