Santina Jacques and Iris Yang to participate in international theatre on ice competition

Posted

Santina Jacques, a freshman at Barrington High School, and Iris Yang, a fifth grade student at Hampden Meadows School, have been selected to skate with the 2018-2019 Ocean State Ice Theatre's (OSIT) novice team.

The team, coached by Sarah DiNardo and Kristen Souza, trains at the New England Sports Village in Attleboro, Mass. and at Mount St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket.

Ms. Jacques and Ms. Yang were members of the team that recently captured the bronze medal at the June Theatre on Ice Nationals held in Geneva, Ill. With their bronze medal finish, United States Figure Skating has invited OSIT to represent the United States and compete at Nation's Cup — an international theatre on ice competition to be held in Marseille, France in April 2019.

Theatre on Ice (TOI) is a form of competitive figure skating that captures the grace and elegance of figure skating with the excitement of live theater and dance. TOI originated in Europe and is very popular there where it is referred to as ballet on ice.

Nation's Cup is held every two years in various host countries. Teams are selected in four divisions and travel from Australia, France, Russia and the United States. Ms. Jacques has been a member of OSIT since 2015 and competed at the last four Theatre on Ice Nationals as well as the last Nation's Cup held in Ann Arbor, Mich. in 2017. Ms. Yang joined OSIT in 2017 and was a member of the current bronze medal team. Both students also skate for the Pawtucket and Providence Figure Skating Club.

Both skaters will travel to Marseille, France for Nation's Cup in April and Pelham, Ala. in June for Nationals.  The team, a not-for-profit organization, is currently seeking sponsors to support additional ice time to prepare for Nation's Cup.
