Letter: Thank you, to those who have chosen to serve

To the editor:

As the parents of a Barrington High School graduating senior, we have had the pleasure of attending several events recognizing and honoring the extraordinarily talented and accomplished Class of 2018.

At one of these events, Awards Night, we were particularly struck to learn that there are six young men entering into military service post graduation. Four have enlisted in the Marine Corps (Josh Roy, Liam Layton, Mac Guertler and Samuel Masiello), one will be attending the United States Military Academy at West Point (Sam Jurgeleit) and one the United States Air Force Academy (Evan Pomfret).

We have been thinking about these young men since that night and are truly honored and humbled that the path they have chosen is to serve and protect the American people and the freedoms we all enjoy. Seeing them recognized on Awards Night made us feel so proud to be Americans.

We wanted to thank them and their families for their commitment, dedication, sacrifice and bravery and we hope that if you see one of these young gentlemen you will join us in doing the same!

With ratitude,

Julie and John Gaffney

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
