Letter: Kudos to high school letter-writers

Here are a few observations:

1. Shout out to the Barrington High School students who have recently written letters to the editor! Mr. Chalue-Feeney and Ms. Kugler both wrote eloquent, well-reasoned and respectful letters. We should all support young people participating with critical thinking and civility in the public square. I feel certain that they will pay no attention to any condescending dotards who try to shush them.

2. Thanks to Kim Jong-un for reviving the word "dotard."

3. I'm worried about the Financial Town Meeting. How ironic that we read in the same issue of this paper that our high school has been rated 316th in the nation, and 43rd for STEM, yet we must vote to defend the schools from an amendment which seeks to cut $500,000 from their resources. Our excellent school system is an important reason property values are so good in Barrington, even for the folks who hate property taxes. (Folks, you're going to sell your house one day, right? I bet you'll be happy about your equity then.) Of course, the danger is that it's a hassle to attend the FTM and people may not be able to make it a priority. But there exists a relatively small but noisy group who seek to lower their taxes at the expense of the common good and they will be at the meeting to vote.

4. I'm pleased that I live in a community where the Town Council listened to the worries of people regarding their ability to pay property taxes and took the initiative to revise our system so that seniors with limited resources can seek meaningful relief. They worked hard and thoughtfully and got scant praise for their effort.

5. Does anyone know where I can get a "Hate Has No Home Here" sign?
