The Barrington Town Council will hold a special workshop discussing the town's proposed ban on polystyrene plastics (including Styrofoam). The workshop will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. inside the Town Hall council chambers.
Barrington Town Council President Michael Carroll announced the upcoming workshop during a recent council meeting, and encouraged people to attend.
The council has invited to people to speak at the workshop — one of the speakers is a town official from Brookline, Mass. The other speaker is a restaurant owner from Westerly who went "plastic-free" at his restaurant. Initially concerned about the financial impact the change might have, the restaurant owner said he has actually improved his bottom line through the change.
Barrington officials said the polystyrene ban, should it be approved, would be applicable to local stores, restaurants and public organizations such as schools.
Town officials are hoping to receive feedback from business owners in Barrington at the workshop.
"Our goal is to hear from them," Mr. Carroll added.
Fields to be discussed
The Barrington Town Council will hold a public workshop on athletic fields in town.
Barrington Town Manager Jim Cunha said the council will host the workshop at the Town Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.
Mr. Cunha said the workshop will focus on any and all aspects of the town's athletic fields, including a proposed increase to field use fees, artificial turf and potential upgrades to the elementary school fields.
At last check, the proposal calls for the field use fee to be increased from $10 per player each year to $25 per player each sports season. It also includes a tournament rate of $200 per day for a Level I (better condition) field and a $100 per day rate for Level II fields. A low utilization, single-day rate is $75 for Level I fields and $35 for Level II.
