Local land trust owns nearly 300 acres of land in Barrington

Posted

The Barrington Land Conservation Trust is looking for community members with an interest in the natural environment to serve on its board of directors and various committees.

The BLCT is a private, nonprofit organization striving to preserve the remaining undeveloped land and natural resources in Barrington, including its water resources, streams, ponds, marshlands, woodlands, scenic and natural sites, and the plant and animal life that inhabit these environments.

The trust owns more than 285 acres of land, including Vendituoli Farm, Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve, PIC-WIL Nature Preserve, Sowams Woods and other smaller environmentally sensitive parcels, and has proudly conducted the renowned research project on Barrington’s diamondback terrapin population for more than 25 years.

"We need help to manage and maintain our protected places, and to assist with educational and recreational programs so that the public can appreciate and enjoy our community’s natural wonders," said BLCT officials in a recent press release. "In today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world, our mission is more important and rewarding than ever."

The local land trust has a specific need for board and committee members with marketing and communications expertise, educators with a science background, and hobbyists who are willing to share their knowledge of the natural world.

"Beyond these specific needs, we are always in need of board and committee members who simply enjoy the outdoors and are willing to share their enthusiasm and ideas," stated the release.

The time commitment for meetings is between 2 and 4 hours each month.
