Hermine could swamp Labor Day plans

Posted

Those planning on spending the long weekend outdoors may want to keep an eye on the weather, as Hermine could bring tropical rain and wind to the area Sunday into Monday.

Hurricane Hermine struck the northwest coast of Florida Friday morning — the first hurricane to hit the state since Wilma in 2005 — quickly weakening to a tropical storm as it moved over land. The storm is expected to continue over land through Georgia and South Carolina, reemerging into the Atlantic Saturday morning off the coast of North Carolina.

Continuing as a tropical storm, Hermine is now forecast to take a turn toward the north in the direction of New England, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm is expected to stall in the ocean off the coast of the mid-Atlantic states Sunday, creating uncertainty where it will go from there.

At the very least, Hermine should send high surf up the coast to Rhode Island Sunday. There is a chance the storm continues its northerly approach, sending bands of high winds and torrential rain ahead, potentially hitting the region Sunday through Wednesday. Hermine has also prompted tornado warnings along its path Friday morning.

As with all tropical storms, the forecast track is uncertain and difficult to predict more than a couple days out. Check back with eastbayri.com for more information and updated forecast tracks as they become available.
