Ginny (Ruth) McDermott, 88, of Barrington, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019 at Miriam Hospital. She was the wife of the late William J. McDermott.
Born in Roxbury, Mass., she was a daughter of the late John J. and Ruth (Hannon) Madden. Ginny was a secretary at Maple Avenue School and Nayatt School for 30 years before she retired. She was also the founder and the first president of the Barrington Educational Support Team, which was the Union for the Secretaries, Clerks and Aids. Earlier in her career she was a secretary for the C.I.A. in Washington.
Ginny had many loves in her life. Her greatest joys were her children and grandchildren. She loved to cook for her family and enjoyed seeing them all gathered around the table in lively conversation. Ginny enjoyed needlepointing and knitting, spending the winters in Naples playing golf and tennis, and lunch and dinner outings with her dear friends. Her family is comforted knowing that she is remembered with love by everyone who knew her. Ginny was a friend to all and truly made every day count.
She leaves six children, Andrea McDermott of West Roxbury, David (Kristen) McDermott of Fryeburg, Maine, Katie Johnson of Rutland, Vt., Robert (Sue) McDermott of Gloucester, Mass., John (Jake Bellissimo) McDermott of New York, NY and Carole (Chris) O’Gara of Falls Church, Va., six grandchildren, Sara, Jeff, Liam, Mollie, Ryan and Jill, one sister, Patricia McCarthy and one brother, Jack Madden. She was the sister of the late Claire Mitchell and Mark Madden.
Her funeral was held on Monday, Jan. 7, from the Perry-McStay Funeral Home, 2555 Pawtucket Ave., East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Luke’s Church, 108 Washington Road, Barrington. Burial will be Forest Chapel Cemetery, Barrington. Contributions to Beacon Hospice, 1 Catamore Blvd. East Providence, RI 02914 would be deeply appreciated.
