The Town of Barrington will be holding an Emergency Preparedness Week from Tuesday, Aug. 14 through Saturday, Aug. 18.
The week will feature a series of workshops aimed at providing information to Barrington residents on steps they can take to mitigate health threats that are becoming more prevalent with changes in the climate.
For example, warmer weather and extremely hot days can exacerbate respiratory diseases and cardiac problems. The mosquito and tick season has also been lengthened by warmer weather.
"Preventative measures residents can take to help mitigate these health risks will be presented at several of the Emergency Preparedness Week Workshops," stated a press release from the town. "Additionally, since the most prevalent natural hazard facing the Town of Barrington is flooding, information on flood safety and emergency preparedness will also be discussed and there will be an opportunity for residents to help develop and evaluate mitigation measures for a number of Barrington’s coastal areas prone to flooding."
Officials are inviting residents to the free workshops. Following is a list of the events:
• Building a resilient community: Tuesday, Aug. 14, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., in the Barrington Public Library Collis Family Gallery
• Senior resiliency — extreme weather: Wednesday, Aug. 15, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., at Atria Bay Spring Village
• Senior resiliency — flood protection: Thursday, Aug. 16, from 11 to 11:40 a.m., at the Peck Center for Adult Enrichment
• Health risks in a changing climate: Saturday, Aug. 18, from 1 to 3 p.m., in the Barrington Public Library Salem Family Auditorium
• Youth workshop — create your own artwork: Saturday, Aug. 18, from 1 to 3 p.m., in the Barrington Public Library Collis Family Gallery
The town's Emergency Preparedness Week is sponsored in part through a grant from the Rhode Island Department of Health.
